About this title: At the start of the Civil War in 1861, 15-year-old Charlie leaves his farm and enlists in the First Minnesota Volunteers, not wanting to miss out on a great adventure. "If you were just fifteen years old, and voluntered for the war between the north and south which became nown as the cival war how would you feel. Well Charley did just that. He thaught that the war wasnt going to last long, but he is in for a big surprise. Charley decides to join the army in michigan,he figures that the war wont last long, and he wont have to fight. When he finally gets his basic training in, he realizes that he will have to fight. He goes thruogh many entense battles, and he has many encounters were he thaught he would die. This is one of the best books ive read in a long time. I would recomend it to someone who is older than ten. It might not be apropreate for someone younger."
"The reading level on this novel is misleading. The reading level and briefness (102 pages with large type and much space between lines) imply it might be suitable for middle school readers. It isn't. If it were a movie, it would be R for graphic war violence, complete with much blood and gore. The novel traces the Civil War service of 15-year-old Charley Goddard (an actual person), part of the First Minnesota Volunteers, who served from Bull Run to Gettysburg, when he was badly wounded. The novel explores what a real boy might think, see, hear and feel as he experiences the brutal combat of the Civil War. The novel is written to present the consequences of the experience of war: a soldier's heart (shell shock, post traumatic stress syndrome, whatever you want to call it), the disillusionment and hopelessness, not to mention the physical crippling, that ruins an individual for any normal life after the war is over. The novel is well written and engaging, but very graphic. It would make a very good companion to The Red Badge of Courage, and would present an interesting contrast to or Myers' account of Vietnam, Fallen Angels."
"This book is about a kid whos fifteen years old and he wants to fight in the civil war.so in 1861 when the civil war began charley left his farm and enlisted in the first minnesota volunteers. he didnt realy knew what a shooting war meant are what he was fighting for.all he knew was that he didnt want to miss out on a great adventure. I connect this book to the world becuase in the 1800 too the 1865 ther was a civil war was going on,and people were protecting ther sides. In the book charley did not know what a war meant but he wanted to see what cined of adventure they will have. I gave this book 5 stars becuase it was a book that i realy liked and it was about a kid who was yuong like me and realy wants to see what about to happen in the side of the U.S."
"so far as im reading it now its a pretty good book about war and sacraficing your life to save someone or something even a place but you will have to see for your self"
