About this title: This biography tells the story of Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley, a boy who loved snow so much that he wanted to capture its beauty forever in photographs. His parents, both farmers, scrimped and saved up their money and bought him a camera that came with its own microscope, and Wilson started photographing snowflakes. While at first no one paid him much attention, he later went on to become a famous nature photographer. With lush color illustrations throughout.

"This is a great biography about the scientist who learned more about snowflakes by photographing them using a microscopic camera. For a fun activity, take notes about snowflakes and notes about Willie Bentley, mount on black paper, fold in half and cut 6 pointed snowflake to put on cover."
"Image a book that tells a story in lovely verse and pictures with sidebars giving the more complex story and details. This one does that. It tells the story of Wilson Bentley who spent his life taking pictures of snowflakes. He increased the scientific knowledge about them as well and pioneering photographic techniques."
"What a great (true!) story about a boy who loved snowflakes--and grew up to share that love with the world! I love his determination to continue with his hobby of analyzing snowflakes--then the passion to persevere (even though so many folks thought he was odd!) and try to photograph them so he could share the beautiful patterns with others. This would make an inspiring read for home schoolers or anyone determined to self-study the topics that he or she loves best.
The illustrations are wood-cuttings and won the Caldecott.
I'm now eager to look up some of Bentley's photography! There are a few examples at the end of this book and they are spectacular!"
"This story of the life of Wilson Bentley is a charming tale of a boy who loved snowflakes so much it led him to devote his life to capturing their infinite beauty. The illustrations are simple woodblock prints that represent the time that they depict perfectly (early 1900's). I also enjoyed the simple story of the book. I wish, however, that more actual images of the snowflakes that Bentley took would have been included within the story instead of only at the very end."
