About this title: This book includes selected stories from eight of Barthelme's previous collections published between 1964 and 1979--many of which are now out of print--and nine previously uncollected stories. Over the years his stylistic innovations have had a wide influence on short story authors and have inspired many imitators, but this collection demonstrates how consistent and singular Barthelme's originality truly was.

"At least 45 of them good. My favorite is the one about the kids who get really depressed because their class pets are always dying, and then at the end a new gerbil arrives and everyone cheers wildly."
"The best description of a Barthelme book that I've encountered is that his writing makes you feel "free." Part of Barthelme's remarkable ability to impact the reader both intellectually and emotionally derives from his gift with endings (ie Shower of Gold, The Balloon, The Death of Edward Lear), which often feel like a punch in the gut. Most of said ability derives from his inimitable gift with words. This is not to say that he's especially readable, and I found myself skipping stories when I first read this, but obscure Barthelme is still better than 95% of the stuff out there.
Does Bartheleme have a progeny? Interestingly enough, I've found that Lemony Snicket's works are quite Barthelme-y in their construction."
"Finally got around to finishing this book, afraid that I might already have read all the really good ones. But I kept being surprised by how much humor and brilliance and pathos Barthelme could keep piling on, story after story. I've always been a fan of "Critique de la Vie Quotidienne," "I Bought a Little City," "The Zombies." This time, it was The Songs of Ralph and Maude in "At the End of the Mechanical Age," the Balloon of Last Thing to Do at Night and the Balloon of the Ballade of the Crazy Junta and the Balloon of God Knows I Tried in "The Great Hug," and the thrilling, hectic, terribly terribly sad and horrifying "A Manual for Sons." I am not such a fan of the meandering collage-like stories; I find the variations-on-a-theme stories and the pretending-to-have-a-narrative-core stories more attractive (because easier? Perhaps). I know no other writer who can write so frequently about child abuse and make it so funny and so disgusting every time. The Five Stars I'm giving this book are a genuine Five Stars, reflecting the pure enjoyment I got from reading it (with Borges, I *did* read most of the best stories the first time around, and filling in the gaps was a little painful)--here the imagination is inexhaustible, and the absurdist gags like a Falling Dog always wind up someplace more interesting than you could expect."
"Donald Barthelme's surreal wit was essential to me as a young writer in my 20s. He was THE American short-story innovator of the postmodern era. Much of his nonpareil compressed charge and humor remains with me, in my own writing."
