"This curious book is a Bildungsroman, a novel about growing up--in this case, in the years in Germany before the First World War. The young narrator, Emil Sinclair, is a self-described seeker who is troubled by the discrepancy between what he feels on the inside and what he observes in the outside world. His seeking is given a dramatic push when he meets Max Demian, a strange and gifted adolescent whose beliefs are much at odds with the conventional ideas shared by most people.
Hesse's book is light on action, and steeped in the ruminations of Sinclair as he tries to sort out his inner life. There is a good deal of what might pass for magical realism, and also a fatalism that haunts Sinclair. Many of the ideas in the book will be familiar to readers who are knowledgable about the New Age movement."
