"Inspiring stories from an inspiring man. A little flowery and repetitive at times, but has some stellar passages that warrant a second and third read-through."
"A compassionate vision. A call to a radical honesty and towards an acceptance of our personal poverty and weaknesses. An invitation to embrace a common humanity where we accept history as it is and "become open to the emergence of new and positive realities from behind the certitudes and prejudices of yesterday."
"Each one of us needs to work at searching for truth, not be afraid of it. We need to strive to live in truth, because the truth sets us free, even if it means living in loneliness and anguish at certain moments. Perhaps this search for truth is a process of letting ourselves be enfolded in truth rather than possessing truth, as if it were an object that we could possess, that we could use against others."

End notes:
It was a chance encounter with an old high school friend on Commercial Drive over Pascha weekend (followed by a long walk and talk where he mentioned he was reading this book) that prompted me to finally pick up this gem off my brother Nathan's bookshelf. It was quite fascinating/educational to read the book with my brother's underlines and marginal commentary ... revealing common struggles, questions, and values.
I've always enjoyed and have been nourished by Henri Nouwen's writings; friend and colleague of Jean Vanier. Both were well respected Catholic theologians who were profoundly transformed in their work and relationships with the intellectually disabled. Also, Martin Buber was quoted/sourced a few times - it's somewhat comforting to see evidence of ideological connections between authors/individuals I identify with."
