"As a middle-of-the-road to slow reader this was quite an undertaking for me. In some ways I feel like you might best be able to judge a book's worth solely by how much you miss the book when it is gone. I miss this book very much. The characters were excellently crafted and had wriggled their way into my daily thinking. This may have something to do with the sheer length of time I spent with the book. Still, with great characters, a page-turner plot, and set in an excellently rendered Japan circa 1600, what's not to like. Admittedly, I do have an ongoing love affair with historical fiction, so this book might not be for everyone. I loved it."
"This book was recommended to me by a friend. He siad that it was the best book that he ever read. I wouldn't say that but it was pretty good. It was interesting that the Japanese thought of the Europeans as savages and as far as the European's sanitary habits we would probaly agree. On the other hand our hero (whose name escapes me)has a hard time with the Japanese ideas that there lives belong to who ever is over them and would kill themselves on cammand form there leader. I guess that is what culture shock is all about. I was also interested to see that the Catholics and Protestants each thought that the others were heathens and destined for Hell. I didn't realize there was such a fight between them."
"This was a BIG book it takes a patience for it to get good i really likes it, has a good mix of some forbbiden romance and also some action here and there but most of it is plot and revenge and romance and his always current thinking of getting the black ship and sailing back to england but as he adopts the customs of japan it begins to change him and towards the end when he had planned to help toranaga defeat his enemys at sea he finds and re-meets his crew who are disgustingly under-kept their hygenie is so low it stinks and they are surrounded by street women (cough) so he is a bit dissapointed, the customs changing him and he finding his own ship and crew revolting but in the end I wasn't satisfied I wanted more out of it but what's done is done I still reccomend the book but one of the charecters that you will begin to like greatly for helping the main charecter dies :("
"I'm a great lover of literature and so far I'm having trouble with this book. I'm 400 pages in and I feel like the story has barely started which is frustrating to say the least. It's also probably true since I still have 700 pages to go. Also I feel like maybe there are some racist undertones that make me uncomfortable. I can't tell if this is intentional or because of when the book was written but there's something about it that rubs me the wrong way. There are also parts that makes me feel like the story is moving in the direction of a trashy romance novel, which I can't say I'm a big fan of. I'm not ready to give up yet but I hope I feel like this read was worth it.
Ok, so I finally finished this book. Overall the story was pretty enjoyable, forbidden love, endless strategy, lots of the things that keeps ones interest in a good book. However, the end was a total cop out which really annoys me. I want to see a good ending after slogging through 1000+ pages. I'm not sure I would recommend this, I think people would like it and I did but again I didn't love it. Throughout the last 50 pages I started to get annoyed because I knew there was no way everything was going to be wrapped up in the little space that was left. I might have to think more on this one but overall I'm slightly disappointed."
