"This series needs a disclaimer: it's not squeaky clean, but it's such a great story with honorable characters.
Miles Vorkosigan books in chronological order:
Falling Free (I haven't read this one) Shards of Honor Barrayar (Shards of Honor and Barrayar are now published in a book called Cordelia's Honor?) The Warrior's Apprentice "The Mountains of Mourning" in Borders of Infinity The Vor Game Cetaganda Ethan of Athos (I would skip this one) "Labyrinth" in Borders of Infinity "The Borders of Infinity" in Borders of Infinity Brothers in Arms Borders of Infinity Mirror Dance Memory Komarr A Civil Campaign Diplomatic Immunity"
"What I really enjoyed about this book were the characters. They were not your usual hero/heroine. Cordelia was very down to earth and usually unflappable and Vorkosigan was not your typical 'handsome' leading man. She was attracted to him for his personality and his values, which I thought was very refreshing. I really look forward to reading their further adventures.
I also want to mention the frequent dry humor, it was quite subtle and sometimes surprising and fitted well with the mood of the story."
"Far less well written than Bujold is capable of. Don't get me wrong, there were some fine character moments, especially early on, while Cordelia and Aral were first getting to know one another. But much of the latter half of the story felt meandering, as though she was trying to meet a contractual obligation or didn't know how to connect to later story elements.
I hate to say these things about such a fine author as Bujold, whose fantasy is truly outstanding for the genre. This book, on the other hand, lacks the battle sequences that make military sci-fi and/or space opera great. The writing is (merely) on par with David Weber, but without the fireworks. That this was written relatively early in her career doesn't surprise me. There are inklings of the brilliant character insights and relationships that grace her later work. Bujold is learning to be great at this point.
Excepting the aforementioned characters, none were well fleshed out at all, and no proper villain has emerged. It has the feel of just getting things set up, defining 2 disparate cultures and characters. I'm going to keep going with the Vorkosigan series with the expectation that it gets better."
"SF. Commander Cordelia Naismith, captain of a Betan astronomical survey team (it's never really made clear what her job is beyond her title, though that fast becomes irrelevant), gets abducted/captured at least twice in 200 pages and also falls in love.
This gets off to a slow, lumpy start, the dialogue ponderous and the characters stiff, but eventually Cordelia becomes rather awesome. She's strong and good at getting herself out of trouble and even has a sense of humor. I don't really buy the romance between her and Vorkosigan; it's ridiculously abrupt and seems more like Stockholm Syndrome than love, but, whatever, it's kind of sweet near the end.
Three stars. If this wasn't part of a series, I think I'd be more frustrated by how flimsy this book is, but at least this way I have the hope that things might get good soon. I keep hearing they do!
Warning: This book contains violence and sexual assault. It's not explicit, but could be upsetting for some."
