"First time I've read up on the life of Shakey. Nice to read of his youth, and his early guitar explorations. It always amazes me the speed these guys first pick up a guitar and then in just a few years they're playing along side Stephen Stills and penning their own songs, recording albums and shooting up superstardom. I'm just jealous."
"Having recently read a few counterculture icons' great autobiographies (Dylan, Lenny Bruce, Johnny Cash), it is clear after reading Shakey what they were all missing: perspective. While Neil Young was cooperative in the making of this book, he wasn't too cooperative, so the interview transcripts come off as more raw than they might have been. The author also shoehorned in a whole lot of historical background on life in 60's-70's LA-area California, which was all new to me. A great read."
"OK - admit it - the fifth star is over the top, a tribute to Neil's essential bonker-itis. The book's not that good - the subject is. Whoever told this boy he could sing was essentially tripping. And what a long, strange trip it's been..."
"This book is written from a perspective of a true friend of Neil Young's. It seems very honest and gives a good view of what Neil thought and what state he was in when he created each of the albums up until the end of the 1990s. This is done through allowing Neil to do his own talking. It is interesting to see that his favorite swear word is not omitted and may be present in every five sentences or so. It's my favorite also. I have tried to read the other books and there was never anything out there that seemed near as true as this book appears to be on the topic. I know, I know, I only put my five star books on my page, so whomever is reading this may not believe me due to how easy I seem to be. I tell you the truth, however, I could not put this book down."
