About this title: In Elizabethan England, an orphan named Widge goes to live with a cruel and unscrupulous man. Because of his unusual ability to write in a secret shorthand, Widge is forced by his master to transcribe a purloined copy of "Hamlet"--stolen from William Shakespeare himself.

"Apprentice Widge is given a task by his new master. He must use his shorthand skills to steal ... Hamlet, yes the play from the Globe Theater. Widge becomes friends with the cast, joins the crew and learns about life and friendship."
"Picked this up one afternoon when covering a class period for a coworker who had to abruptly leave his classroom. Anyway, as the students were taking their quiz, I started reading this book to pass the time. I was immediately hooked and drawn into Widge's 16th century world. The use of language, the pluck that Widge must develop and maintain as he goes from one Master to another, the insight into Shakespeare's London and Globe Theater, all made for thoroughly enjoyable reading. Perfect for ages 10-13 who enjoy stories with adventure (a bit of swashbuckling), a sense of history (Elizabethan England), and characters who must face the odds on their own (no parents).
If you have read and enjoyed Crispin, you will enjoy this book as well.
I understand that there are additional books in the series (two, I think). I'm looking forward to going to my local library and checking them out."
"The Shakespeare Stealer is about an orphan who is sent to steal one of Shakespeare's plays, and stays at the Globe Theatre to act with that troupe. This book tells information about England in that time. It is the first book in the Shakespeare Stealer series. I think the genre of this book could be historical - fiction."
"The language could be difficult, especially for a reluctant reader. Blackwood tries to use too many kitchy, historical terms and doesn't use context clues to help a young reader understand the meaning of the words. I thought this book would be a great front loading activity for a Shakespeare unit. It wasn't."
