"I enjoyed the book, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped (would've given it 3.5 stars if I could)
The first in what has been billed as the Islam Quartet, Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree tells the story of the fall of Muslim Spain to the zealous Catholic Crusaders.
As I was already familiar with the Western account of the Crusades, I found it absolutely fascinating to read it from another perspective. There were so many moments where my heart just ached because of the events that occurred. It's perhaps fitting to read such a book in current times, where so many problems seem to be rooted in conflicts that have existed for hundreds of years. Ali's language is often beautifully evocative but his characters fall a bit flat and there doesn't seem to be a great deal of emotional connection (or the emotions that are felt are not really explored, but more stated in the same tone as one might describe the weather).
I will definitely be interested to read the rest of the Islam Quartet, as I think Ali has a great deal of interesting ideas and views..."
"The petering out of Maurish (islamic) influence in late 1400's Spain (after Queen Isabella finally pushed them out ...) is the theme, within which the plot about a noble islamic family is placed. I smiled, even laughed and nearly cried, whilst reading this book, which features a rather severe, sad ending. Can't remember why I bought this book (most likely a book review from a few years ago), but am thankful I did."
"Agak lambat membaca novel ini. Cara bertutur Tariq Ali yang luas, melebar ke sana kemari lumayan melelahkan. Tapi karena cerita yang menurut gw menarik, dengan latar belakang Spanyol (Andalusia ?) di masa kejatuhan kekuasaan Islam kala itu, tetep menarik. It was OK cukup layak. Belom ada point kuat yang bisa bikin bintangnya nambah. Lanjutkan ke buku berikutnya."
