"i am a big fan of history, in particular the victorian era. one of the subjects that fascinates me is the great game. the gamble of policies that Britain and Russia engaged in over colonial possesions in india, and central asia(the russians being in afghanistan in the 80s is an extension of the great game) this book fills in the middle of the story starting between the two world wars. it readins in some cases like a burroughs adventure novel, and stars characters that might grace the pages of a james bond novel. from american fossil hunters to british and white russian spies this is the story of communism coming to asia and the western worlds attempt to keep it at bay."
"This title is a fitting conclusion to Hopkirk's trilogy about the Great Game and its continuation into the first half of the 20th century. Along the way much is revealed about Central Asia and the thrilling events that took place in what are now current day Uzbekistan, Tajikstan, and China's Xinjiang autonomous province. Having just completed reading about the 20 years of Russian history following the October Revolution, I found Hopkirk's account to add greatly to that knowledge. As such I would suggest having some background awareness of Bolshevism to get the full impact of 'Setting the East Ablaze'."
