"The task of briefly reviewing Neruda's Selected Poems is a daunting one, similar in effort to climbing an ice sculpture on a hot summer day. You are very liable to end up where you started and all wet besides. The period of his writing that fascinates me personally is what might be termed his "social action" period, for want of a better phrase. It was a time stimulated and motivated by the Spanish Civil war. Where his beautiful lyric poetry may have been isolated, even estranged from humanity prior to the war, he seems to have reached an epiphany here that the most important aspect of writing is to unite the writer with the human race and vice-versa. He reached out to humanity, not to observe, analyze, or dissect, but rather to join a collective consciousness: Each day I learn something, Combing my hair everyday I think what you think, Walk as you walk, And eat as you do, I circle my love with my arms As you circle yours, And then When all's known And each is made equal, I write I write with your life and my own.
He was now going to write poetry with the idea that it could be a useful tool in the betterment of all mankind. Of course, it was this socialist poetry that eventually got him hounded by fascists. But perhaps the greatest gift an artist can give is to stay true to his vision during adversity. Some critics claim that the poetry written during this period of his life ( mid 1930's to mid 1950's) was little more than political reportage. Certainly there is a proclivity to see it that way when he writes things like: Turncoats and generals see the death of my house, look well at the havoc of Spain: out of dead houses it is metal that blazes in place of flowers, out of the ditches of Spain it is Spain that emerges, out of the murder of children, a gunsight with eyes, out of your turpitude, bullets are born that will one day strike for the mark of your hearts.

There is also a danger of over-simplifying poetry to make oneself look brilliant as critic. Neruda had reached a point in his life when he understood that the complex surrealism and pastoral settings of his former poetry were impotent in the face of history. And if this writing is a bit tendentious and over-blown and emotional at times compared to his other work, I think it's good to step back and realize the contribution this writing made to future poets like Carolyn Forche, Allen Ginsberg, Denise Levertov, among others. It may also be a good thing, a healthy thing, for us, as writers, to realize that beyond technique, style, imagery, allusion, and undecipherable complexities, lies an important goal for the poet, the translation of human experience into language that is meaningful to others. How nice it would be if we were remembered, like Neruda, in the eyes of our culture, as a poet who made a difference."
