"An interesting story about Robert Baer. He was a hippie turned CIA field agent in Europe and mostly the middle east. The book was a lot slower than I thought it would be and walked through his individual contacts that he used to "run". He explains various accounts of plots to overthrow heads of states and plans to foil them, with a few of these ending up in a giant mess, Baer barely escaping with his life.
All in all, it was interesting to see the inner-workings of a field agent in the middle east before the happenings of 9/11. At the beginning of the book he mentioned the book would not win him over any friends at CIA headquarters or politically for that matter and judging by the stories that he told you can see why.
If you don't read the book, check out the film that was based upon Baer's life and "See No Evil", Syriana (Clooney & Damon)."
This is the book that "inspired" the movie Syriana, whatever that means because it is nothing like Syriana other than the main character is a badass from the CIA with a white house that hinders the agency's search for terrorism in order to protect oil. The other thing in common with the movie was that the book was a terrific complex and thoroughly exciting look into the middle east. The first half is a look into how CIA agents become what they are: recruiting, training and missions. The second takes off with some of the most complex and interesting cases in the middle east from embassy bombings to hostage situations to the nature of state sponsored terrorism to the political wheeling of oil, the white house and middle east foreign policy - what the CIA knew and what it did and failed to do in all of these situations. Compulsively readable I finished the book quickly not being able to put it down. Anyone interested in the middle east, national security and foreign affairs.
Also, the guy went to my school, so you know he is a baller."
"No one should expect Baer to be as eloquent as Shakespeare, but he does paint a vivid picture of how things were for CIA agents on the ground during the eighties and nineties. Things began to change in the late nineties, with CIA agents looking more to forward their careers than gather intelligence, a detriment for the United States, which depended on agents with a knowledge of the complexities and outright contradictions that make up the Middle East. In short, it's a portrait of how 9/11 was allowed to happen."
"A very interesting look at the life of a CIA agent who spent a fair amount of time in some of the world's hot spots. The book is divided into three main sections--his early life and entry into the CIA, his time in the field as an agent, and his time back in the US dealing with politics and bureaucracy.
Baer obviously feels very let down by both the CIA and the US government in his attempts to fight terrorism. While part of me wonders how much of that is a stubborn individual railing against working with others, a larger part of me wants to side with him and believe the problems he describes are both accurate and damaging."
