About this title: "Secretariat is an elegantly crafted, exhilarating tale of speed and power, grace and greatness, told with such immediacy that the reader is lost in the rush of horses and the clatter and ring of the grandstand."Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit. In 1973, Secretariat, the greatest thoroughbred in horse-racing history, won the Triple Crown. The only horse to ever break the two-minute mark in winning the Kentucky Derby until recent winner Monarchos, Secretariat also pulled off one of the most astounding victories in the annals of horse racing by winning the Belmont Stakes by a record ...

"The first time I saw Secretariat's 1973 race in the Belmont it gave me chills. This book articulates the feeling of greatness I had the first time I saw Secretariat race - it explains how extraordinary a horse Secretariat was, and why his run for the Triple Crown, starting with a Kentucky Derby raced in record time and culminating in a Belmont Stakes that he ran, practically by himself, in shatteringly world-record time, is legendary in horse racing.
This is a book written in straight-forward, journalistic prose. Nack occasionally derails into chapters devoted to detailed thoroughbred lineage, or the person-by-person (!) selling of the shares that made up the syndicate that owned the breeding rights to Secretariat, but he manages to pace out these chapters with well written and exciting accounts of training and races. The second half of the book, covering Secretariat's run for the Triple Crown, is the best part. He also spends careful time making sure the reader understands the technical details of horse racing needed to appreciate Secretariat's victories - for example, I never knew how to rate the speed in a horse race, using a 12 second rule of thumb, until I read this book. (Which is, I have to say, probably the single most useful fact I've ever learned about horse racing.)
This isn't the best book on horse racing I've ever read - "Seabiscuit" by Laura Hillenbrand is still my gold standard for that - but it ranks very favorably up there, and covers quite possibly my favorite racehorse of all time.
"Secretariat , known as Big Red, was one of racings greatest champions. His margin of winning (31 lengths) in the Belmont stakes that made him triple crown winner has never been broken. He was known for accelerating off a turn and going faster in the stretch . The book tells his story from the time he was a foal through his racing career. Even people not interested in racing can appeciate the great feats of this horse and enjoy reading the race track tales of this powerful thoroughbred. After reading the book you can go on U Tube and see his races . It is fun to read about his first two years as a weanling and yearling and enjoy how he turned himself into a racehorse who left his fans breathless with his talent. This is a very nice read and a great gift."
