"Reading Salvador Dali's memoirs is like taking a walk into one of his paintings. It's an intense, crazy place but his artistic sensibility is off-the-charts wonderful.
Dali starts off by describing his childhood when he always wears an ermine cape and a crown, literally the prince of his family. His parents spoil him and believe him to be the incarnation of his brother, also named Salvador, who died nine months before he was born. He grows up to be a real Sun-King, the center of his universe, but yet his narcissism is charming because he so freely embraces it, as he does everything about his just too wonderful self, a self too wonderful for words!
In one section, so typical of his self-centeredness and charm, a teen aged Dali lies in the sun after a swim and discovers hairs on his belly. He plucks one off, turns it into a lorgnette, and then marvels at the beautiful rainbows the hair creates as it merges with his eyelashes. Charm, narcissism and art --and yes, it's wonderful, it's marvelous, it's too wonderful for words."
"Someone gave me this book so I felt obligated to read but ended up really enjoying it. Dali realizes he is insane as well as a complete snob and eccentric ego-maniac which makes you really like him despite all of that."
"Such a tough book to get through for me. Maybe cuz Salvador Dali was such an odd and brilliant man. I didnt finish the book, but I will before the end of the year I hope LOL"
