"Scorpians is another well-written book by Walter Dean Myers. Myers tells the story of Jamal, a boy that is a few decisions away from altering his life forever. Jamal lives in Harlem with his mom and his sister, Sassy. His world has been turned upside down when his older brother is sent to prison. Now Jamal has to be the "man of the house"- a responsibility that lingers on top of his saddened mother, poverty, and problems at school.
Then, Jamal is approached by Mack, one of his brother's gang buddies. Mack wants Jamal to take over the leadership of The Scorpians, his brother's gang, and gives Jamal a gun. While Jamal is scared to have the gun, and wants to give it back, he soon finds out that it makes some things in his life easier. Jamal goes back and forth, trying to decide what to do with the gun. His decision to throw away the gun comes too late though, and now his relationship with his best friend is altered forever.
I would recommend this book to mature fourth graders and all fifth through eighth-grade students. Scorpians is a book that could be taught in the classroom. It would be perfect for teaching characterization and motivation. For example, why does Jamal not give the gun back initially? What motivates him to keep it? The gun could also be used to teach symbolism. What does the gun represent to Jamal? What does it represent to Tito? There are so many things you could do with this book, and I don't see any problems with getting it approved. Another good book by Myers!"
"I loved this book because it is a realistic book about a young boy in tough times in a big city. It was one of the books where, even if you hate to read, you would love reading this. I like to read, but even if I didn't, I would not have been able to wait to get home to read. I actually looked forward to homeroom read days! Walter Dean Myers gives plenty of details, and makes the characters very likeable and realistic. I think this book would have won the Newbery award, and not the Newbery honor, if it would have had a better ending."
"It's messed up how much trouble Jamal, the main character, can get into after his brother is sent to jail. His brother use to run a street gang which he wants his little brother, Jamal to now control. After trying to become leader, Jamal gets into a lot of trouble at school with weapons and much more and it is hard for him to become leader of the gang. The upsetting thing about this story is that stuff like this does happen in the real world. Teens ruining their lives getting involved in drugs and gangs and all sorts of trouble. But this is a very strong story and a good book to read. :D"
"It is easy to see why this novel, from all of Myers' novels, won Newbery Honor status. Although it deals with the same kinds of conflicts and challenges treated in many of his other novels, it is more sophisticated and less hopeful, leaving an open ended ending that hints of problems still to come in the life of the young Harlem African American protagonist. The 12 year old protagonist could be drawn from typical gang member profiles: weak in academic skills, he is picked on at school by a stronger, older buddy. His older brother was head of the Scorpions gang, making money as couriers for a drug ring until an armed robbery resulted in his going to prison. His father, irresponsible and abusive, only shows up at home occasionally, and his mother must work long hours to support the boy and his sister. His brother's buddies try to draw the protagonist into the gang, giving him a gun, which gets him into major trouble. He manages to get out of trouble by the end of the book, but loses his best friend in the process. The novel portrays the gang/drug life realistically and would serve as a good source of meaningful writing and discussion about gangs, drugs, responsibility, poverty."
