"I liked the idea that this book was about Flora, a mouse who learned to read and saved her family by warning them about the poison. But what you don't know is that all of her siblings die. She only saves her parents! Then her parents, who have another 9 babies, don't feel safe in the school so they move out to the field where an owl bites her father's tail off! Then a weasel invades their new home and eats/kills 8 of the 9 babies! The mouse who chose to stay in the school is joined by a pet mouse who has escaped from his owner. They quickly become girlfriend/boyfriend. The parents and the last baby move back into the school. The baby, Lovey, leaves the school and comes back home with a boyfriend. It ends up with Flora telling her boyfriend, Buck, that they are going to have babies in the fall! I thought that this book had some good parts, but also some strange parts as well. The first half of the book could have been made into a nice picture book, but they would have had to change the part where all of her siblings die."
"I got this book from my second grade teacher. I like this book because it's all about a mouse who trying to save her family beacuse poisin is everywhere. so she learns how to read."
"Oh boy... it's that time of year. Every book I read seems to be about a talking animal or a bully. The good news is, most of them are very entertaining. The bad news is, this one wasn't. But, then we have these literature circles at school, and the kids get together and talk about the book and they are all completely into it. Which makes me kind of like the book, because if it can make my fourth graders excited about reading, then it must be my friend. That happened this week with this book. I can't really believe they like it, but they do. And the use of language is interesting, which I've heard is typical of this author. Hence, the gallant pig."
