About this title: An historical novel that illustrates the growth of England from a sparely inhabited tribal region to an emerging culture during the age of the Saxons. Set in Salisbury over the course of several centuries, it traces the fortunes of five families who become instrumental in the growth of the region.

"I read this book shortly before I visited England the first time after leaving her shores in 1972. I managed to visit some of the places mentioned in the book, purely as a tourist. It was the second re-visit in 2003, where I was strangly drawn to this this area and surrounding country side. I was advised by a spiritualist to visit Stonehenge, as there was a cryptic message for me there. What I discovered on a 3rd visit to Stonehenge, on a cool, wet, rainy, English day, was to change my life profoundly........................"
"RUTHERFORD IN MY VIEW IS ONE OF THE GREATEST HISTORICAL NOVELISTS OF OUR TIME. HIS STORYLINE FOLLOWS AN ACCURATE HISTORICAL PATH.HE TAKES THE READER FROM PRE ROMAN TO PRESENT DAY ENGLAND.THE BRILLIANCE OF RUTERFORD'S FORMAT IS THE MERGING OF FAMILIES AND EVENTS THROUGH EPOCH AFTER EPOCH OF THE HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ISLES. IN MANY CASES THE CHARACTERS FOLLOW FROM ONE BOOK TO ANOTHER OF HIS MANY NOVELS. I HAVE READ, AND ENJOYED ALL OF RUTHERFORD'S WORK! HOPE H HAS MORE ON THE WAY."
"Like others, I learned more about British history from this book than any history I've read. The story rolls along, the writing is solid, and I was sorry to see the book end. It's repeating motifs, intertwining stories, and exploration of the impacts and resonances of Stonehenge through the ages were wonderful. I will read this again and again. It's a book in which I take notes in the margins and refer back when I want to remember historical details. I enjoyed it so thoroughly that I also read Russka, and will read London and New York by the same author. I suspect Ken Follett was, or could have been, inspired by this book when he wrote Pillars of the Earth. Recommended highly."
"The portion of this study of ancient Britain is
so interesting one could hardly put down the book. I first read this many years ago and subsequently have purchased many copies for relatives and friends interested in this genre."
