About this title: Women who once worked for the military and who knew Jack Reacher are dying. How and why these women are in danger completely baffles the elite FBI team working the case. There is only one certainty: there is a new kind of killer out there, one so calm, cautious, and careful that even the brilliant Reacher is left running blind.

"Child plays around with the FBI/serial killer thriller genre in this 4th Reacher book--women scattered at the far extremes of the country are murdered in a cold, clinical, and bizarre manner by a killer who leaves absolutely no traces. Good for people who like mysteries where there are clues throughout, so that you feel like you had a fair shot of solving it even when everything comes as a surprise. Reacher is no longer the musclebound boneheaded thug of Tripwire, which was a relief. I kinda enjoy how all the love interests in these books seem like they could appear in fighting video games, with exaggerated physical features that seem to exist only to distinguish them from each other. Reacher's paramour here, a 6'1" FBI agent with an endless ponytail and fondness for form-fitting suits with ties, reminded me of SF4's Crimson Viper.
I would have given this five stars, if not for some majorly silly implausibilities, I mean, even beyond what one normally expects in these books. Like, how many times will Reacher be fingered for a crime he didn't commit? Also, was bothered by the book and Reacher's demonstrated hostility toward unattractive women :( I did feel some admiration at the meanness of this exchange, however:
Reacher listened to the contempt in her voice and stared at her thin hair, her frown, her crooked tooth, her hard dried-up body in its ludicrous cheap businesswoman's uniform. "You think I'm making advances to you?" "Aren't you? Wouldn't you like to?" He shook his head again. "Not while there are dogs on the street," he said.
Finally, I need to remember not to start these books at night, since I will stay up late to finish them even if I have work in the morning."
"Perfect airport reading. Though this Jack Reacher novel comes right after my least favorite one (to date), Lee Child seems to be hitting a familiar stride here. There's a serial killer who seems to be targeting military women who have pressed sexual harrassment claims (and have since left the army), there's a group of FBI agents who first see Reacher as a potential suspect but then want to recruit him as a consultant, there's a hot young FBI agent, etc. There's also Reacher's uncomfortable feelings about his current more tied down status--boyfriend to Jody and owner of a house, given to him by Jody's father in the last novel. It's the usual mix of suspense and testosterone and that's not necessarily a bad thing."
"Number two was a little less exciting than number one. Number three flattened out even more. Now, number four is the weakest so far. Child keeps me reading with his unusual antihero, Jack Reacher, but I'm not interested in Reacher's yearnings for the drifter life as he tries to settle down. I want him to be living the drifter life--and wreaking havoc as he does so. Plus the 'mystery' in this one--the serial killer's identity--was just too easy to figure out. Should I go on?"
"Another supurb mystery by Lee Child. I really like his protagonist, Jack Reacher. The action and suspense are carried throughout, and Child keeps you guessing until the end, although with this book, I'm disappointed that I didn't figure it out: all the clues were there, but I let the author lead me by the nose.
I really recommend this book, as well as other novels in the Reacher series."
