"This trilogy was wonderful. There is a complexity of emotion and resonance that springs from the great well of characters and tone in this story--first in a subtle way but it continues to grow and run deeper and deeper beneath the surface as the trilogy goes on. At some point that subtle evocative resonance is no longer a spring but an ocean beneath these pages. Lovers of Fantasy will place this trilogy next to Tolkien and George R.R. Martin on the top shelf. Most non-Fantasy fans would love these books also. Though if you have read Herbert's "Dune" and Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and just couldn't get into it then this is also not for you. A word of warning-this trilogy doesn't begin with a bang, I was rewarded greatly for not applying my "hooked by 100 pages or dumped" rule to the first book--Robin Hobb has set her music to a different rhythm and it is an unconventional but beautiful flow once you find the beat and let your mind readjust to it."
"This is Book 2 of the Farseer Trilogy, meaning it's the middle of the story and I felt that it was noticeable, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five. At times I felt that the story dragged a touch - only slightly, in a couple of places. However, this doesn't mean the storyline is lacking or that the characters weren't deeply woven together. In fact, I still believe firmly that a lot could be learned by studying the way the author developed the storylines of all the characters and the plot in this trilogy.
Each time I thought to myself "enough, move on" it was almost as if the author had planned it exactly to happen in that way, because there was always a sudden change that would draw me deeper into the plot, grasp me firmer. And the plot for this trilogy is complex. There are twists and turns in the story that a reader could not believe possible. The ending of this book left me feeling somewhat disturbed, yet I had seen it coming but I still wasn't prepared for it. I put the book down and couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. Part of me wanted to reject it, yet another part of me embraced it wholeheartedly. It was the strangest feeling and testament that the story as a whole had an affect on me.
A good book pulls you in and holds you firmly within the storyline. For me, this story (I'm talking about book one and two) wasn't just words on paper; it was people and places coming alive around me. Just as the characters in the book had to make alliances and fight for survival; I felt as if I was another character struggling for survival along side them. To become so absorbed by the plot and so totally bonded with the characters tells me that the author did her job well.
This book, no, this trilogy, is highly recommended.
Now, after reading and enjoying the first two books, I'm expecting a lot from the third. I hope I won't be disappointed."
"I can't quite decide whether to give this book 4 or 5 stars - it's definitely a 4.5 book for me.
This is an odd book. It's not a page-turner as such, yet I'm completely drawn into it and find myself thinking about the story even when not reading it. This second book in the trilogy is even bleaker than the first one - even more so because I'd accidentally spoiled myself by reading the blurb for the third book! (Note to self, don't read the blurb for later books in a series, you never know what they may see fit to reveal).
Very much a transitional book as the first half tied up loose threads from the first book, and the second half paved the way for the last book. Still very enjoyable though, and I'm looking forward to seeing how things turn out."
"This is a riveting book, and I lost myself easily in the smooth writing. But it reminds me of a stage play, or an old BBC television drama where you have to overlook the fact that the battle is being fought with 12 extras. There aren't enough characters in the book to make the world seem viable. But in exchange for that kind of realism the author includes a lot of little details in Fitz's experiences that I very much appreciate. Admittedly the good guys are fleshed out much better than the bad guys, and there aren't enough ambiguous characters.
I find Regal to be a very shallow, disappointing villain. The author's one attempt to explain his animosity fails because we are never allowed to see any sort of struggle or pain in the man; only his gleeful, wanton destruction of everything that Fitz holds dear. But in a way, my frustration with him echoes what Fitz must feel, to see the Six Duchies destroyed by such a contemptible person.
I wanted very much for at least one of the bad guys to turn out to be a friend in disguise. I had my eye on one character in particular, whose nature remained a bit obscure for most of the book, but in the end I was disappointed."
