About this title: Young Julian is indirectly responsible for a jail break at Wandsworth Prison that prevents his father (who is Governor of the prison) from joining the rest of the family on holiday. The events of that journey to the Cornwall coast resonate in Julian's life for many years afterward.

"It took me a while to catch on to the characters and the different time periods. Time when childhood was important, time when Alzheimer's disease is almost front and center. Location and time -- separated by many years but at the seaside in a rented bungalow. The characters are well "drawn" and the geography is described in enough detail to allow me to be there, watching the story unfold. It is extremely well written and the story itself is involved enough to want to find out what happens next."
"I found the plotting in this family saga intriguing. A young lad, Julian, is taken to Cornwall for a beach holiday, American relatives join them, his father is recalled to work, but the events that unfold are only understood years later. The plot is cleverly woven. After reading so many Alzheimer's books about mothers and daughters, it was refreshing to have a story with unusual angles and perceptive insights into relationships: parental, sibling, heterosexual and homosexual. I found the writing compelling, the fractured timescales, the evocative settings, the complex characters, all well crafted, but still don't get the title! Can anyone enlighten me?"
"Despite liking the last Patrick gale that I bought on impulse, I didn't really like this one. Can't put my finger on it...didn't seem too believable, particularly the ending. I would try another PG book though, just wouldn't recommend this one."
Quite different to Notes From an Exhibition, but still following some of his themes: gay main character, Quaker religion, references to mental illness, set in Cornwall.
