"Great historical fiction. 12 books make up this excellent series by Winston Graham. Written in 1951, they are some of the best historical fiction I have read. Takes place in Cornwall, England when the main character comes home after fighting the Revolutionary War in America. We don't to often read about the British side of that. A little slow in getting started but once it does, it's good. This was made into a TV series in Great Britian, which we can't get in the U.S. and Tony told me that everyone would rush home at night to see the new Poldark episodes!"
"Story of an Englishman who returns to native cornwall and finds he no longer believes in the way of life of his class nor the woman who has betrayed him."
"Seeing the BBC miniseries from the '70s made me want to read the books too. And this one was good-the characters are all intriguing and full of quirks, misunderstandings, and surprises."
"Read this as a teen - got a copy 2nd hand in Mevagissey in Cornwall whilst on holiday - it just had to be done. Am totally enjoying re-reading this and even more now I've seen where it all took place etc.
So glad I re-visited this book - doubt I'll get the rest of series but really enjoyed this book."
