"Dealing with the impact and beauty of specific places, the sometimes oppressing bonds of civility, and the obscure but powerful imperatives of human nature, this book tells a thoughtful, dramatic story. Lucy is a young Englishwoman traveling to Florence with her proper and older cousin, who also acts as a chaperone. Yet despite the tight social restrictions and mores imposed by the Victorian period, the vivacity of the Italian city works a change in Lucy. She begins to prefer honest enjoyment to civility. And through several encounters with a disaffected and socially unacceptable young man named George, "A Room with a View" shows the happiness and freedom that come from regarding the world through sincerely wondering eyes. Both the sights and action of Florence and the wild beauty of Lucy's family's country seat are rendered with beauty and inspiration, and the characters are complicated and endearing. This book was an excellent and dramatic story and is a testament to incorrigible youth and vitality."
"When traveling I like to do research before I arrive to get a feel for a place. I like to read books about my destination and books written by local authors. The Italian city of Florence is on my soon to visit list so I am looking for works about Florence and Tuscany. Recently an article in the New York Times Book Section recommended reading E.M Forester's classic A Room with a View because a lot of the story takes place in Florence and Forester does a lot of place name dropping.
That explains what I am doing reading a book written in 1908. I agree the book did mention a lot of top tourist sites in Florence and it was a pretty good story even with its dated style. Basically it is a romance novel that has substance A young woman visits Italy, falls in love, tries not to be in love, goes back to England and begins to make very bad decisions, and I won't spoil the ending. Forester, with elegance, puts forward several themes, among them; women should determine their own feelings, they don't need men to tell them how to think, and religion should not play a role in how we feel about out bodies (read sex).
If you like classical literature; well-written, with substance and depth and humor you will like A Room with a View."
"I liked this novel, but not as much as Howards End. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. What I liked was the witty dialogue - Forster's dialogue really shines, and the exchange been the cast of oh-so-British characters is quite humorous. Lots of on-target jabs at tourists, which would certainly transfer to today's world. Another plus are the views of Florence. Makes you want to take the next flight to Italy!
What I didn't like so much was the romance. I just didn't feel the sparks between George and Lucy. I could certainly laugh at Cecil, and know that he wasn't right for Lucy - but I couldn't really get the initially repressed passion between George and Lucy. (I saw the film adaptation years and years ago, and from what I recall, the romance was more convincingly portrayed.)
What I did like, as with Howards End, is Lucy's internal push and pull. Lucy wrestles with following the lead of her heart and passion vs. obeying narrowly prescribed societal standards. (Of course, this is in the context of a very pampered and privileged social milieu.)"
"It is so pleasing to me to return to so-called "classic" literature and love it just as much as I love contemporary fiction. Don't read Forster for his plots, which are relatively traditional, or his style, which is nothing too amazing. Don't read him for his characters, all of whom, despite being excellently done, are rather clichéd. Read him instead for his narrators, which talk directly to the reader with a flippant, almost mocking tone that makes you smile despite yourself. A ROOM WITH A VIEW is a quick read, pleasing and inspiring, and well worth your time."
