About this title: In the early 1800s, Edmund Talbot, a young and rather priggish Englishman, takes passage on a boat heading for Australia where he is to be an official in the colonial government. In addition to Talbot, many of the eccentric passengers--a sexually predatory sailor, the aging coquette Miss Zenobia Brocklebank, the ship's tyrannical captain--undergo profound changes in the course of the voyage, during which a naive clergyman is victimized and, finally, pushed to suicide. These events are described in the diary Talbot keeps en route. "Rites of Passage" won the Booker McConnell prize in 1980.

"I liked this book - basically its the journal of Edmund Talbot (sort of a big deal in Ye Olde England) who travels to start a new life in Austrailia. The story is of how society and the norms degenerate aboard the ship as they get farther and farther into the uncharted waters. Edmund struggles between maintaining behaivor of a proper gentleman and acting how he wants. The main reason that I liked the book was because of the fact that Golding tried really hard to make it read like a journal - the chapters are misnumbered, some key details are missing, etc etc."
