Description: New. 0553572989 The magnificent conclusion to one of the greatest science fiction sagas of our time. The time of reckoning has arrived. As a final genocidal Crusade threatens to enslave humanity forever, a new messiah has come of age. She is Aenea and she has undergone a strange apprenticeship to those known as the Others. Now her protector, Raul Endymion, one-time shepherd and convicted murderer, must help her deliver her startling message to her growing army of disciples. But first they must ... read more
"What a wonder. And what to see 'the world.' Read all four books and be open to the spiritual/philosophical impact of books 3 and 4. Makes other writers look like louts without ambition. Or perhaps only Simmons has the skill to move in to a genre and re-invent it so successfully."
"Slow start to a big (tear-inducing) ending. I had grown to love Aenea and Endymion by the final pages, and though I (uncharacteristically) had predicted the ending, I was still overwhelmed when it came to pass. The biggest weakness, I felt, was Radamanth Nemes and her clones -- late additions to the saga over-all, their sudden appearance and god-like powers were off-putting -- especially considering, in the end, they accomplished nothing. They also lessened the impact and sheer awesomeness of the Shrike, already diminished slightly in the latter two books by having his origins and purpose sort-of explained.
Still don't think I quite understand why the future is still in flux for Kassad and Mesteen, and I resented the re-writes Simmons introduced as "misunderstandings" from the first two novels -- namely, the Three Warring Factions of the Core being a cover for the Millions of Warring Factions of the Core. Makes more sense this way, but unfortunately he'd already set it up, so the re-working of it was annoying.
Overall, though, I really enjoyed the last book, though it will never surpass the first two for me."
"I was eager to finish the story started in Hyperion, and while I had to splurge to do it (the library did not carry it, so I actually had to pay for this one), I was somewhat disappointed with the finale.
Don't get me wrong: Dan Simmons did not fail to provide a great story. He filled in the blanks, answered the questions, and completed the circle. But unlike the previous three, which i enjoyed immensely, this one seemed to ramble. Information dumps were all over the place, and at times I felt bogged down as one character or another explained everything...and I do mean "everything." The story is epic, and with the vast scope introduced, but hardly fathomed, in Hyperion a lot had to be explained. While the previous three seemed to flow the information with the plot, leaving morsels of details along the way, this one left large dumps of information in long passages of dialogue. I felt myself asking: who really talks this way?
That said, this did finish the story, and it did finish it satisfyingly."
"Concluding the Hyperion books at last -- in shifts of two books each spread over a couple years -- was ultimately quite satisfying. I struggled with my star ratings on all but third book "Endymion," rounding down on both "Hyperion" and "Fall of Hyperion" just because, oh, I don't know, I'm an ass or something. So I rounded up the 3 1/2 stars this concluding volume normally would warrant. Can't say I'm a complete bastard.
"The Rise of Endymion" adequately answers most of the mysteries of the preceding volumes, albeit in a rather longwinded manner; parts of this one drag. The section of the book set in a world of crags and cliffs above a poisonous sea is a slow slog. In addition, this extraordinarily imaginative far-future series does go too far. The revelation of the extent of so-called "messiah" Aenea's powers prompts a few "hey, wait a minute ..." moments. (Wait ... if she can do THAT, why didn't she do it when they were in danger of being killed/captured 150 pages go?)
Anyway, I'm glad I read the last two books. At worst, one must admire Simmons' astonishingly detailed, well-thought-out world (worlds). I'm not sure I've ever encountered any novels of the far future that are this imaginative and intricate. It's really quite startling.
"The Rise of Endymion" isn't perfect, but it's hard to imagine tying together this many loose strands in a better way. And Aenea's-Raul Endymion's final fate is just about perfect."
