About this title: Too short to be a novel, too long to be a short story, the novella is generally unrecognized by academics and publishers. Nonetheless, it is a form beloved and practice by literature's greatest writers. In the ART OF THE NOVELLA series, Melville House celebrates this renegade art form and its practitioners with titles that are, in many instances, presented in book form for the first time. Academics hail it as the beginning of modernism, but to readers around the world--even those daunted by "Moby-Dick"--BARTLEBY THE SCRIVENER is simply one of the most absorbing and moving novellas ever. ...

"What i liked about the book was how ambiguous Bartleby was throughout the novel. We never find out what was exactly wrong with him and it leaves us guessing in the end. one thing i didn't like about this book was the two other characters and how they offset each other i found it pretty ridiculous and almost unbelievable. the main quote of the novel that propelled Bartleby's persona was how he said, "I would prefer not to". it showed how he didn't want to do any work and wasn't interested in being paid. another little tid bit was how obsessive the lawyer was with Bartleby and he couldn't bring himself to get rid of Bartleby even though he was hurting his business and getting into trouble with the police."
"Bartleby the Scrivener was an ok book. I found it to be boring, lathargic, unevenful, and in a way pointless. Rather than the only conflict being the fact that Bartleby was lazy and constantly said "I would prefer not to" as a way of getting out of doing work, and him not leaving the office, I would have liked for there to be more INTERESTING conflict. I wanted something unexpected to happen. I didn't like how Bartleby died alone at the prison in the end, I wish the Lawyer would have been able to help him a bit and find out from Bartleby himself why he was the way he was. Bartleby was quite odd: he only spoke when spoken to, he was a hard worker in the beginning but became quite lazy to the point where he would just sit at his desk and stare at the wall, he never left the office (he considered it his home), he was stubborn and refused to do work that was apart of his job description. Until the end, we as the reader do not know why Bartleby is that way. We find out that he worked in a Dead Letter Office in Washington, and was let go from there when management changed. So although this novel showed us as the reader that we should accpet other people's assistance when offered and not offer help to others in order to fulfill one's own agenda, it could have been much more interesting. The plot line needed many more exciting events and a greater conflict."
"I enjoyed how the author really used imagery and descripion to convey his feelings and surroundings in this book. The moral of the story or point was hard o find, but you were constantly searching to find what happens to Bartleby. Because this story is so different and the situation is not typical, you tend to read into it more and more trying to figure out the book itself. There were some points in the book that were confusing, but it makes you think for yourself at that point because not everything is given to you, but makes you draw your own conclusions. The middle of the book was the best because the narrator's feelings constantly change toward Bartleby, and that made me want to see why he was changing his view so much. Overall, I enjoyed how comlex and detailed the author created this story."
"I was assigned to read this piece of literature during while attending the University of Idaho, in the 1960 period. Now this is a very old story of a Wall Street business man (lawyer) and one troubled and troublesome employee. I have thought about this over the years and just recently found the entire text on the internet and re-read it in its entirety.
I really enjoyed this book, because of the manner in which the employer wrestled with the problem, the compassion he showed, and the efforts he made to do the right thing.
All in all it is a tragedy, but not without some wry humor and intrigue."
