"Calvino is the writer who loves reading. Though he doesn't actually come out and address the reader outright as he did in "If on a Winter's Night A Traveler", he comes pretty close. He cites old literature and philosophers and plays on the idea of self mythology. The main character is a quirky individual and the plot is told by a 3rd person one can only guess to be a townsperson. With all good legends, the reader becomes aware of the hyperbolic way events are written and told and while being skeptical, one can only be carried away by this fun read."
""Read" is kind of a lie. I found this book extremely dull and quit after about 100 pages. The title is all you need to know. It's about a Baron who climbs into the trees and doesn't want to come down. If you'd like to read a lot of descriptions of how someone goes about living in trees, this is definitely the book for you. I think the idea is clever, and I think if the book were a children's novel, and written accordingly, it would be much more enjoyable."
"This is a fabulous book! Cosimo decides after an argument with his father that he will go and live in the trees and not come down! In fact he is true to his word (how many of us made equally silly promises when we were young and couldn't keep them?). He manages to live a full and useful life in the trees, preventing fires spreading, hunting food for himself and even having love affairs. Here is a lesson in sustainability and living closer to nature, a plea for tolerance for everyone who chooses to live their lives differently and a totally entertaining read.
