For anyone who knows me personally, that has to sound a bit shocking. But this book makes the pro-life and pro-disabled case from the other side. Singer rightfully points out that there is NO WAY to be pro-abortion and against infanticide. He shows carefully and clearly that such a position is downright incoherent. He also makes a convincing case that all of the controversial "life" issues are inextricably intertwined. Of course, he thinks we should abort in all cases of "unwanted" pregnancies (there are too many damn people anyway he argues, and like all Malthusians, his numbers are ridiculously inflated. He we are in 2009 and shocking the world population ISN'T 8 billion). And we should especially abort the disabled, and if they are born by mistake, we should kill them. But, we shouldn't hurt animals or eat them. Oh no. Chickens are in, but imperfect and unwanted humans are out. Welcome to the brave new morality of "humanism"!
Of course, I reject every last one of Singer's conclusions, but I am able to do this because I accept "the sanctity of human life ethic" that he deplores and seeks to discredit. And I accept it even for the hard cases. But for those who think they can have some disgusting hodge podge of traditional beliefs sprinkled in with some vague Kantian talk about "autonomy" and "dignity", they really need to read Singer. Because he quite effectively shows just how self-deceived such a position is. The Christian view he believes is wrong, but he admits that it is at least a respectable position to have (though he thinks that it is difficult to maintain in hard cases) And I will admit that his position is respectable as well, in the minimal sense that it is at least consistent and coherent. And I especially agree with Singer that all that mess in the middle is just that: a mess.
Anyway, this is a rich and engaging book. I suppose I shouldn't recommend a book that advocates eliminating disabled humanity, but on some level I am just convinced that if people would think through the implications of their commitments they would change them. That's the hope anyway."
"Perhaps my favorite class in college was one on medical ethics. Peter Singer explores some of the most controversial medical cases and ethical questions imaginable. Some of his ideas may infuriate you but force you to think about the ethical struggles we should all consider when it comes to the advancement of medicine."
"Really amazing. Working in the health care industry it means more to me than maybe to others. At some points you feel physically disturbed because you see his point and agree with what he has to say, even though it may be against everything you have been taught and believed in previously. I recommend this to everyone."
