Denise is the typical single mom with a son, Kyle, that has a speech problem. Like all lonely heroines of Nicolas Sparks' books, she is ultimately rescued in love. She has no family to speak of and her entire life revolves around her son with whom she spends ever waking moment with. This of course leads to the problem of when is there time for love? Love of course ultimately finds her in the form of Taylor, the handsome tall fearlessly brave fireman. The plot is the secrets of Taylor's life that hold him back from falling in love with the heroine, Denise.
I picked up this book for that reason, light and fluffy, not much thinking required. There really was no significant plot, nothing to keep you interested other than seeing if ultimately the characters fall in love and make babies. In true Nicolas Sparks fashion, his book falls down to not his greatest, to long for the story line. I was skipping words and the story still flowed, if that's how you want to call it."
"I had never planned on reading another Nicholas Sparks book, but my mother-in-law gave me a copy of this book thinking I would like it. And actually, I did start out enjoying it better than I thought I would, perhaps because one of the main characters is a young boy with a disability (and I have one of those myself), but the more I read on, the less I enjoyed it. The writing was so pedestrian that it barely sparked my interest, and the repeated references to Taylor's father's death without explanation became annoying. Of course I realized that it was an important mystery that somehow related to Taylor's inability to stay in a relationship, but, when, at the very end of the book, the death story is finally revealed, it is so horrifyingly pull-at-the-heartstrings, do-I-really-want-that-image-in-my-brain tragic, that I felt all the more manipulated. As popular a story-teller as he is, Nicholas Sparks just doesn't do it for me."
"I love the way this author writes - with just enough detail to feel what the characters are going through.
Denise & Taylor meet in a small town in the Carolinas, literally, by accident. He's a volunteer fireman and contractor, and she used to be a teacher turned waitress.
I can totally relate to Denise in my early days as a single mom, struggling and not looking to get involved with anyone. She goes through the elation of a what seems to be a whirlwind romance, as we've all experienced at one time or another. But, in her case, she has a little boy to think about, who has problems with his speech.
As time goes by (not too much time), things in Taylor's past start to affect their budding romance/relationship. Taylor seems to stay true to Denise's son, but disappointments loom.
I'm just about at the end of the book, very anxious to know how this all unfolds, what Taylor's secrets are, and whether he's in this for the long haul.
Boy, does this bring back some painful memories for me ...
What tangled webs we weave, when yet we set out to deceive (is that how it goes?!!!).
***OK, I stayed up late reading the rest. I'll leave it up to you to do the same, if you want to know the ending ...""
"One of my favorite Nicholas Sparks books. The relationship that develops between Denise and Taylor is slowly formed but intense. But parties have doubts that threaten the relationship at one point or another but they pull through in the end. I love the relationship that develops between Taylor and Kyle. Kyle had never really had a father figure before but took an instant liking to Taylor. The book was an easy read but held a complex story.
*SUMMARY*
When confronted by raging fires or deadly accidents, volunteer fireman Taylor McAden feels compelled to take terrifying risks - risks no one else in the department would ever take - to save lives. But there is one leap of faith Taylor can't bring himself to make: He can't fall in love. For all his adult years, Taylor has sought out women who need to be rescued, women he leaves as soon as their crisis is over, as soon as the relationship starts to become truly intimate.
Then, one day, a raging, record-breaking storm hits his small Southern town. Denise Holton, a young single mother, is driving through it when her car skids off the road. With her is her four-year-old son, Kyle, a boy with severe learning disabilities and for whom she has sacrificed everything. Unconscious and bleeding, she-but not Kyle-will be found by Taylor McAden. And when she wakes, the chilling truth becomes clear to both of them: Kyle is gone.
During the search for Kyle, the connection, the lifeline, between Taylor and Denise takes root. Taylor doesn't know that this rescue will be different from all the others, demanding far more than raw physical courage. That it will lead him to the possibility of his own rescue from a life lived without love. That it will require him to open doors to his past that were slammed shut by pain. That it will dare him to live life to the fullest by daring to love."
