Perhaps the most devastating blow was the recent tabloid revelations about his private life, but Gordon Kaye won the sympathy and admiration of the country by facing up to the situation and telling the truth about his homosexuality. He tells the whole story with wit and compassion and also talks about the other stars he has known and worked ...

"If you're an `Allo, `Allo fan, you'll enjoy this book. There are some behind the scenes anecdotes, though I would have liked more -- but the book is a biography of Kaye, not the show. I generally take autobiographies with a grain of salt, because they are usually greatly biased by the author, who prefers to regard himself as blemish-free-- in other words, the warts tend not to be revealed. This makes for a less than truthful piece of work, so this is why I avoid them.
But this one is different, I think.
I believe that Kaye, with the help of HIllary Bonner, wrote this because, in 1989, the issue of his homosexuality had become public. I believe this book was a step toward damage control. Evidently, back in 1989 in England, there wasn't much tolerance for gays -- in the media, at least.
The book is quite short, probably because Kaye was fairly young when it was written. I was rather surprised that, at his age, he had written a biography at all -- these things usually come in later life, when, retired, one does such things. This is what leads me to beleve that it was damage control -- an explanation on his part, if you will.
Gorden Kaye appears to be a gentle, kind human being who is, as we all are, just hoping for love.
