"I agree with some of the points in this book and others not so much. Like any psychological theory, different ideas, methods, processes, etc. appeal to different people. In my own opinion, taking a particular approach and saying that this is the best way or the only way is difficult at best.
That said, Glasser's book basically says that therapists need to show the patient what is reality and not accept excuses about past events or such. Glasser's ideas of taking responsibility for your actions, the therapist taking a personal interest in the patient's life and well-being, and generally seeking to break away from traditional psychotherapy (Freud for non psych people) are all points that I agree with.
However, Glasser has some points that I find odd. He states that mental illness does not exist, meaning that it shouldn't be treated as a physician would treat a medical injury or diagnosis. Though pigeonholing someone under a particular label of mental illness is not usually constructive in my opinion, diagnoses of well-known psychological patterns can be very beneficial, as some treatments, methods, therapy, etc. are USUALLY THOUGH NOT WITHOUT EXCEPTIONS an ideal way to BEGIN to treat a problem. The best physicians, psychiatrists, counselors etc. are the ones who start with a basic idea of what may help this person, and are willing to make changes as the problem becomes clearer and is better understood. Glasser also likes to almost completely discount past history of the patient, which, again in my own opinion, may or may not be appropriate, but to say that it is never needed is a mistake.
In summary, psychology is like ice cream, everyone has their favorite flavor. This may or may not be yours. Maybe you stay away from it because you're lactose intolerant--Maybe that's your mother's fault, who knows?"
"I read and loved this one summer while working with troubled teens. It flies in the face, though, of our most recent sensibilities about how self esteem is gained, etc."
