"I just started this. It was withdrawn from our library and I thought I should give it a shot. I'm kind of fascinated with the Russian revolution, it seems like something that happened a long long time ago but it really wasn't that long ago at all.
The book was fine. It was pretty dense and had a ton of very similar sounding names to keep track of. I don't think I can highly recommend it unless you happen to be really, really into Rasputin."
"Whew. Took me a long time to get through this one. I guess I liked it, but I can't give a rave review. Although I learned quite a few facts and factoids about Rasputin and this period of Russian history, I don't feel I gained any understanding of the man, his contemporaries or the times. However, that might have been the author's point: it was a crazy time, and Rasputin and his motivations may be impossible to understand. Given that, I don't think that the much-touted "Rasputin File" shed as much insight as the author hyped. He was quick to discard any testimony that didn't gibe with his theories, saying multiple times that so-and-so was "obviously lying here" without really backing up his reasoning. For instance, he offers several scenarios for Rasputin's murder, but his final theory is really based on nothing other than his own conjecture.
The writing style was incredibly choppy; I was frustrated by the constant sentence fragments and the sentences begun with "And". Example: "As if Irina's guests, scared off by Rasputin's arrival, had abruptly abandoned it. And were continuing the soiree upstairs. And to stage that soiree with music from the gramophone, and naturally, with noise and voices." It drove me crazy. I can only assume that this is appropriate in Russian, and that the text was translated word-for-word without any thought to correct the basics for English readers."
