"These suspenseful stories include pinches of romance, devotion, and humor, as well as truly unique characters. The mysteries use as background superb portrayals of 12th Century England. The author is a noted Medieval scholar. Positive. Caution: the series is aimed at adults, not adolescents. Many themes of these mystery novels are ADULT themes, including rape, abuse of various sorts, etc. They are all positive, ultimately."
"Perhaps I started wrong, as this is the first Brother Cadfael book I've read, but I quite liked it. Some of the solutions are rather stretched, but it's to be expected. And I like that this set is less about the solution than the people involved and how crimes or the fixing thereof affect them in personal and spiritual ways. The characterizations of the middle ages' people and places is very well done; I look forward to reading more about this monk."
"Three short stories featuring the adventures of Brother Cadfael, a crusader-turned-Benedictine monk.
The crimes to be solved are interesting, although not in the same league as Agatha Christie where you can probably work out "who done it" by following the clues. (I can't. I read just to enjoy the story.) These crime stories involve Brother Cadfael taking action to discover the culprit, so a reader can't really work the wrong-doer out for him or herself.
Still, Peters brings the medieval world to mind very easily and creates vivid characters which makes these stories well worth a read, in any case."
