About this title: Experienced psychologists Dan Kindlon and Michael Thompson posit that in American culture, boys "are systematically steered away from their emotional lives toward silence, solitude, and distrust." Their exploration of how this occurs and the painful consequences that can follow covers extensive ground, including chapters on education, discipline, ...

"Bottom line I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand their boys better, but if you are looking for specific "Do this..." this is not the book for you
About This book was written by two psychologists and a journalist and describes some of the how and why boys behave the way they do. It is based on research as well as cases that the psychologists have seen in their practice and covers many points regarding the complex world that boys grow up in. Some of the material covered include why boys may struggle in early education and the implications of that; the price that parents pay for harsh discipline; the culture of cruelty that exists among his peers (bullying, teasing, fighting, etc.); the relationship between sons and their fathers and their mothers; boys' relationship to drugs, drink, girls and anger and violence. There is a lot here!
Pros - A lot of material is presented - The material is well-organized and informative - Despite it is based on cases seen in their practice (and may be extreme cases), they do include cases where they may have been called in because a child's grades were slipping - Includes a section on "What Boys Need" where they discuss, in general, what kinds of support boys need
Cons - Even though they included the "What Boys Need" section, I found it didn't provide sufficient examples to help a parent figure out what to look for and what to do and also what words to use with their children - This is an older publication, but I plan to read another book by one of the authors (Speaking of Boys)"
"I thought the book was an excellent view into the mind of young boys and how adults are prone to misread them. Kindlon's message that quick-fix culture and a stereotype of boy-toughness add to the dearth of effective discipline and communication of boys is accurate and well-observed. What to do about it could have been better handled. Perhaps this is beyond the scope of the book."
"From my perspective as a special education teacher in Oakland, emotional disruptions in children due to our lovely post-modern infractions, are an epidemic and no one seems to know what to do with these kids except punish them. This book is very readable and tells us to love them in so many practical ways."
"This is a book for everyone who has boys in their lives to read, underline and annotate, and re-read over and over again. Parents, grandparents, coaches, mentors of any kind will find - within the many vignettes that make up this book - help for how to nurture growing boys' emotional health. The ongoing litany of case studies may seem tedious to some readers, but each offers new glimpses into the intricate prisms of boy's emotional needs. In the few weeks I've slowly read through this, I can earnestly affirm that the models shared in this thoughtful book have encouraged me to be more tender with my son, more aware of his deep vulnerability (while also respecting his autonomy). As a result, he has been, in these last few weeks, a much happier child. (How satisfying it is to watch him smile and laugh in the REM cycles!) What a difference it has made to acknowledge his fears, his needs; to acknowledge when other children and adults have fears and needs; to ripen his capacity for empathy! This book will be required reading for me for a long time to come, and I highly recommend it to you as well."
