About this title: "I found deep comfort in realizing that Jesus loves even me, a ragamuffin, just as I am and not as I should be, that he accepts me, though I am most unacceptable. I came to this book hungry; I tasted and saw afresh that our God truly is good and that he is, after all, for us".-----Michael Card, Musican

"After my divorce, this book was influential in showing me why my wife, at the time, did all the horrible things she was doing to my daughter and myself. Anyone who questions their faith or wonders why someone as bad as themselves should go to Heaven once they've done bad, and horrible things, should read this book immediately. Thank you to my buddy Christopher for buying me this many moons ago."
"If you are interested in the Christian faith but find it self-righteous and restricting, this book might be a refreshing change of pace. This writer definitely refrains from judgement, and makes the case for self-acceptance of your own frailty and affirms that God eagerly takes on "special cases", and he proves we all somehow fall in that category. It is a humble book that gently puts it arms around those who have failed miserably in their faith and yet still want to try to find their way toward their Truth."
'Burkhardt writes, "I fear for the lawyer whose only life is corporate tax, the doctor whose whole existence is someone else's prostate, the business exec. whose single responsibility is to his stockholders, the athlete who puts all his eggs in an 18-inch basket, the theologian who thinks the world can be saved by theology... A closed mind kills marriages and human relations; it deadens feelings and sensitivities; it makes for a church that lives in a thousand and one tunnels, with no communication and no exit."
'If we maintain the open-mindedness of children, we challenge fixed ideas and established structures, including our own. We listen to people in other denominations and religions. We don't find demons in those with whom we disagree. We don't cozy up to people who mouth our jargon...Of course, the open mind does not accept everything indiscriminately...It does not absorb all propositions equally like a sponge, nor is it as soft. But the open mind realizes that reality, truth, and Jesus Christ are incredibly open-ended.'
"I was originally going to give this book four stars, but that's because I was comparing the writing style to that of Nouwen, my favorite spiritual author. However, when I read that Manning had been accused of out-Luthering Luther, he got the bonus star.
While many of these reviews could come with remorse that Manning didn't speak to morality or that he encourages a life of sin, I'd suggest that such readers missed the point of Manning's work. Let me offer two illustrations, one from Luther and a second from Manning himself.
Luther was once challenged by a student concerning the gospel with the question, "If God will forgive me no matter what, doesn't that mean I can do anything I want?" Luther responded, "Yes, you can, but considering how much God loves you, what do you want to do?"
Manning gets to the same point a bit differently with these words: "Love has its own exigencies. It weighs and counts nothing but expects everything. Perhaps that explains our reluctance to risk. We know only too well that the gospel of grace is an irresistible call to love the same way. No wonder so many of us elect to surrender our souls to rules rather than to living in union with Love.""
