"Although the cover gives you the impression that the book is another light read/chick lit type of novel its not. Its a good book that takes a hard look at Rachel's addiction to drugs and her steps through a rehab program to overcome her addiction.
I'm normally not one who likes to read books about drug addicts but this was a good read and though sometimes sad on the whole it was a funny and uplifting read. I'd really recommend it to anyone."
"I really like Marian Keyes' writing style. She's super funny and witty and it really grabs you. It did take a little while to get really involved in this particular book. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it from the very beginning. But it took a little longer than I would have thought to take a thorough liking to the characters. Once everything really starts to unfold though it takes off. It was a little steamier than I think was necessary, it sort of pulled me out of the book rather than expressing the character development it was going for. I like a little more subtlety and imagination in my sex scene's, but that's just my own personal style.
The book was super good though. Kind of a kooky prologue, but it meant well and I still enjoyed it like crazy.
Thanks for the recommendation, Rochelle! Good call!!"
"This book was recommended as a future book in my book club. We were looking for a light read. All the reviews showed this was about Rachel in rehab and did not sound light hearted at all. There were also no English copies in the Zürich library. You never thought that might be a problem to find a book and not want to buy it or share one copy between 10 women, did ya ?
So, we decided on a different book. The next week I spotted this at my favorite English book store and did not put it down for the next 4 days.
This book is hilarious. It is totally inappropriate for a conservative book club. It is flooded with fbombs and SEX scenes.
The book starts with Rachel not thinking she is a druggie. I LOVED that she did not think she should be put in the groups of addicts at rehab like everyone else. The rest of the book flashes back to her pre-rehab life (hot SEX).
It's too bad we are not having any more kids I could name a little boy Luke after the "real men." He he!"
"I really enjoyed this book, but then when it's Marian Keyes I always do.
As with all of Marian Keyes' books, I laughed and cried my way through it. I love her style of writing and it was an easy read. It was also a page-turner and I read it in 3 sittings.
I like the way Marian can take a serious topic - in this case drug addiction - and infuse it with her brand of chick-lit to make a great book, whilst still being sensitive to the issues around that topic. I thought that she handled the emotions of the protagonist well, especially the issues of denial.
It was a great story and the characterisation was brilliant... I swung from loving Rachel, and really rooting for her; to wanting to slap her upside the head and scream at her to WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!
