In the 1930s Carstairs began to travel the world and eventually settled in the West Indies, where she bought the island of Whale ...

"I found Jo Carstairs interesting but not very likable. She certainly had her admirers. This book made me wish I could afford to be a beloved eccentric. At my net worth, unfortunately, this kind of behavior would get me institutionalized, rather than adored."
"ohmiGOd, you hAVE to find this book and read it. this book is truly bizarre and awesome. it chronicles the true story of this wealthy butch lesbian who sailed boats in the earlier part of the 1900s, bought her own island to live on and was a total womanizer, but here's the best part-her companion for life was this weird little doll she named Lord Todd Wadley who she dressed in crazy outfits and did like, glamour shots with. she was obsessed with this doll and you're never quite sure if she went through women so often because none of them measured up to Lord Todd Wadley, or if she wished she was L.T.W. (in this gender-jealous peter pan type way). Or both (in that Narcissus way). in any case, it's a fascinating read, and you won't be disappointed."
