About this title: Claireece Precious Jones is an overweight, illiterate black teenager pregnant with her second child--both the result of incest by her father--and infected with the AIDS virus--also thanks to her father. This first novel by the poet and performance artist Sapphire tells the story of how Precious miraculously finds redemption and deliverance through the efforts of one of her teachers, who teaches her to read and write.

"This book held me captive for about four hours, which I read until I finished the book. This was a hard book for me, because I had to look back on my own life, although I did not experience that much pain, but I do know about how you can fake it for people you come in contact with, who are not aware of your pain.
I know that this book will help me to become a better social worker, and look for what is not being said....."
"Yes, this is a powerful, angry raw book, and yeah, it really needs to be read, but by the end I felt rather numb about it all. Precious was totally unlikeable, unlike the way they're portraying her in the upcoming movie, and I liked that-I liked the fact that she wasn't this hard outer coated softie that we'd love and defend mentally by the end of the book; you defended her because it was the right thing to do. She had been so royally abused by reality that you WANT her to win something by the end, and even if it is a tiny phyrric victory, it is a victory. But at the same time, it all got to be too much-as if the author felt that what had happened to her in the past just was not enough horror, and HERE, take several shovels more. It got unbelievable, almost - you were waiting for something like a car to explode while she walked by and burning her, or hell, a 747 to fall from the sky on her head, maiming her. In a way, it lessened the impact of what WAS happening to her and how she dealt with it."
"This book reminds me of a car wreck...you know you shouldn't look at it but you can't help it. It's like I didn't wanna hear all the terrible things that happened in this book, but I had to. I had to know how they survived what they were thinking when all these things happened and where they took themselves because of it. This was an amazing book. My only complaint is I wish it would have been longer, I wanted justice for them, and I wanted to read about that justice, but I guess that wouldn't have made this book as good as it was...there are not always happy endings, in then end of this book it was their new beginings, I would have liked to read more about them. This book is powerful, and I became enthralled by it and it saddened me all at the same time, it was very sad. Things like this are happening all around us, it's just so hard to believe that there are horrible people in this world, and even harder to believe that there are people who enable their behavior. Long story short...read this book!"
