"I loved this book. It is a memoir written by YA/children's lit. author, Walter Dean Myers. Myers grew up in the Bronx in a lower-working class broken family during the 1930s. The book deals with race and class issues. I found it fascinating to learn that Myers' love of reading, eventually made him drop out of school because he preferred reading the classics on his own."
"This autobiography reads like a novel, but a thoughtful one. Raised by friends of his mother, Walter struggles between two identities: the street wise, athletic "bad boy" with a speech defect who fights the kids making fun of him and absorbs street values, and the thoughtful reader of classics who yearns to write poetry and stories that will move others. His academic/creative identity moves him farther from his parents and friends even as he realizes that his skin and poverty color will keep him from the college education he wants and deserves. The story shows his struggle to decide who he will be and the progress that finally ends with his success as an author. Very positive and thoughtful."
"I really like Walter Dean Myers books. I respect him as an author so it was interesting to read about where he came from. He had a really rough time throughout his teenage and young adult years (didn't even graduate from HS!). This is a good read if you enjoy his books--Monster, Fallen Angels, Sunrise Over Fallujah, Slam! to name a few."
"this book had moments of 4 and i liked the writers style; it sounded very natural and flowed nicely. having said that, I was left feeling like nothing was resolved at the end. As i got closer to the end of the book and we were still at 16 years old...i do realize that it's about his teenage years but it just didn't sit "completed" with me. i will read more of his books though."
