"Great read. Somewhat dated, though, with the discussion of current medicines and research being conducted, so I'd love an updated publication. Could have done without the egotism in the introduction ("when *I* pioneered the first sleep laboratory..." "when *I* testified before Congress on the importance of sleep..." and so on). You don't have to read the whole book to get it, though. If you'd like a condensed version, I recommend reading Chapters 3 - 5 in the Fundamentals of Sleep to understand the basic science of sleep, chapter 9 (Our Chronically Fatigued Syndrome) to understand the severity of sleep deprivation, and chapter 10 (What Does Sleep Do) to understand the importance of sleep. Chapter 13 (The Real Life of Dreams) is pretty fun for anyone who's into dream interpretation/analysis."
"FlyLady recommended this book in 2001. I devoured it (I had a newborn was exhausted). Probably one of only 3 or 4 research based books I've read that was informative, interesting and truly fun.
Big take away - everyone needs enough sleep. For adults that looks like 8 hours per night. If you're not getting it, everything in your life will suffer."
"We need sleep. Why we ignore this to the extent we do, I don't know. But Dement shows the effect of living sleep-deprived and it aint pretty. Talks also about "sleep hygiene" --practices to ensure the best rest."
