"Great introduction to running, covers all topics pretty quickly and easily in an easy to understand format, covering shoes, training, diet, everything you immediately need or expect and some you didn't know to ask about. Bit of an Idiot's Guide to Running, but without the insulting title. ;) A bit redundant in parts, but that's to be expected for what it is, not a book you'll read and reread, but a good book for a library or club to have in its collection."
"A concise handbook of issues pertaining to running, from starting to racing to the marathon. In the running community, Burfoot's credentials are impeccable: A former winner of the Boston Marathon. His writing credentials aren't bad either: editor of Runner's World. Not as detailed as Galloway's stuff, but valuable nonetheless."
"A very practical and informative book on all aspects of running. The chapters are short, two pages each, and you can easily find the specific information you want. So far it has helped me fine tune my stretching, pacing, and diet."
"Whoa! Multiple people inquired about this book! Here's what I have to say about it:
When the author (can his name really be "Amby Burfoot"?) described his work as a "practical" guide, he wasn't kidding. The major fault of this book is its almost absurd brevity. It's about as spare as can be, the kind of thing you browse for an hour, then refer back to periodically for advice and/or encouragement. A quick glance at the table of contents will lead you to a 1.5-page summary of the topic of interest, followed by a 0.5-page summary of the summary. One might actually be able to read and comprehend this book WHILE RUNNING. That being said, as a novice, I did pick up a few helpful training hints and a bit of vocabulary that may or may not be obvious to more experienced runners. Overall, I'd recommend this book to any newbie - it only takes a second to read and it touches on almost every relevant topic, from shoes to diet to training methods to women's health issues. If you need more detailed information on any particular topic, you can always refer to one of the more comprehensive running tomes."
