"Age 13 is the perfect time to read this book, and THIS was my first introduction to Science fiction. The plot was so original and intense to me at that time I could scarcely do anything else in life except read this, its sequels, and the rest of the Edgar Rice Burroughs stable of 57 novels. About 5 times each. Thus flunking Jr. High because I did nothing else for 3 years! What does it matter if Burroughs was a "pulp fiction" writer? He inspired millions of readers around the world to delve more deeply into fantastic science fiction, and thrilled more lives than many another book has done. Great filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas freely admit Burroughs was their springboard into a lifelong love of Science fiction, and the inspiration for such great films as Star Wars, E.T., and Indiana Jones. After almost a century, Burroughs novels are all still in print somewhere, and avidly read in dozens of world languages. Tarzan, himself, was even nominated for president of the U.S. in the 40's! How many "literary classics" can boast a record like that? What MAKES a literary classic? Not the least of Burroughs impressions on me is that after reading thousands of novels in the last 48 years, I still think Burroughs has the largest(yet most easily understandable) vocabulary of any writer I've read. My reading speed went up in 2 years from 350 words a minute to almost a thousand, and my vocabulary IQ in 9th grade was a perfect 100%, at a Master's Degree level. As a parent, I turned each of my kids on to reading by reading them a chapter a night of "Princess of Mars", knowing that within a week, they would turn the light back on after I had left, and read all night. It worked in every case! And the excitement of Burroughs books have kept my husband awake and driving as I read Burroughs to him on many long trips far into the wee-small-hours. I rarely rate books 5 star unless they have impacted or moved my life in a significant way. Burroughs, though fun and exciting, did not write deep and deathless literature, and so was given only a 4 star rating by me. But I must confess that his books did indeed impact my life, my ideals, my viewpoint and many goals in a hundred small ways during the most impressionable period of my youth. I love these books, as my father did before me! I'm now reading them to my grandchildren!"
"i love these old sci-fi books. they are not based on good science, and the feats of their characters don't stand up to critical thinking, but they are filled with adventure and romance. just perfect for bringing out the inner pre-pubescent boy in me. this book is the first installment of the "John Carter on Mars" adventures. (i am already well into the second book of the series.)
by the way. i did not read the Penguin Classics version. this was a free, on-line version available from one of several websites that offer free, out-of-copyright books for your iPod touch or other device.
at first, i did not believe reading a book on an iPod Touch would be very comfortable to the eye. on the contrary, i experienced periods when i could not put it down. And being able to just pop it into my pocket was incredibly convenient.
yes, this is turning into more a review of the iPod Touch than the book, so i will end by recommending the Touch's book-reading application "Stanza," and leave it at that."
"This book exemplifies Burroughs' rather old-fashioned ideals - so expect racism and chauvinism. The white man is always superior and the beautiful damsels don't wear much and always need rescuing. Also expect convenient plot twists and shaky science explanations. (What? another trap door?). But you won't care about any of that when you start reading about a world so detailed and fantastic that it must exist somewhere. All the best representations of the classic archetypes - the Hero, the Beautiful Maiden - are in this book. If you think it is simplistic concept now, you will understand the draw of Barsoom, John Carter of Mars, and the incomparable Dejah Thoris after reading this book."
"The Mars series of Burroughs is a classic adventure novel and its setting on the dying Red Planet allows Burroughs to move away from his racialist dogma found in the Tarzan series. While falling into a classic paradigm of the great hero who overawes and out-competes the "natives", it contains such moments of great humanity, even for people who have four arms and tusks, that I always find it uplifting. The style of Burroughs adventure writing has always appealed to me and his stories create a living world without devolving into anthropological essay. I must confess that his love of glory, honor and indomitable human spirit, while seeming archaic and filled with machismo, are always refreshing to someone who lives in this post-modern world.
As an academic, I've been struck on re-reading this book and others in the series and seeing how Burroughs describes a dying planet that forces its inhabitants into and ever-more militaristic and combative relationship with each other. John Carter is not just a great swordsman, but an injection of spirit into a hardened and long-suffering community. Ultimately, his theme of reconciliation between historically antagonistic groups is beautiful, even if it sometimes gets ignored because of all the swordfights and exotic locales."
