"i like patrick and angela stories. they are too violent for my taste but i allow dennis to get away with it cause i know he has to put in the violence to sell his books. this novel was like a good action movie with interesting characters thrown in. MYSTIC RIVER gave dennis the intro to the movies and many of his books will follow that lead-SHUTTER ISLAND,GONE BABY GONE..others. i have 2 more detective novels yet to read but i consider his GIVEN DAY to be his best writing."
"This is a mystery/detective story set in Boston. Another series that I started in the middle, but it doesn't seem to matter. I would like to read some of the earlier stories. It was interesting how the killer really wasn't a killer because the main victim was a suicide. I won't give things away but if you like "A hard-boiled shocker." -NYT book review I think you'd enjoy this."
"This book started out as being too fast-paced, too stereotypical in its crime detective sort of way. The character of Pat Kenzie, whom I've since found out to be the lead character in other of LeHane's novels (as is Kenzie's girlfriend) was pretty much one-dimensional: Rough around the edges, Irish Catholic, Boston born and bred, deeply flawed but also deeply principled. I'd "heard it all before" and actually decided to lay the book down after completing some 100 or so pages. I simply wasn't going to bother. But then a turn of events occurred, and I needed something to occupy my mind in short spurts and with little effort. PRAYERS FOR RAIN turned out to be just the thing. And I have to admit that after 50 or so pages, I was completely entrenched and eager to return home at the end of the work day in order to jump back in. It's true the characters remained one- and sometime possibly two-dimensional, but that somehow didn't matter. It was good enough. The story took some unexpected turns, and the pace of the book being as fast as it was, enabled me to thoroughly enjoy it to the end."
"The final (really? I wish there were more, please Dennis please!) book in the Kenzie/Gennaro PI series. I read this whole series back in the nineties and it was fun to revisit now that cell phones and other tech stuff is no longer a novelty. Also fun revisiting this after watching 'The Wire' which Lehane wrote for. Lehane has an excellent ear for dialogue and writes superbly about both sides of law and order. Best of all for the series, though, is the heart or the hearts of Kenzie and Gennaro. This is a true love story about people who see the darkest in humankind, struggle with it and are still able to make connections with others. I love these books."
