"To be honest, the only reason I read this book is because it was included in the same volume as the afore-mentioned book on prayer by Andrew Murray. However, I found it to be a perfect continuation of the primary thing God has really been impressing upon my heart this year - the importance of walking in the Spirit and performing even the most mundane duties to His glory. I loved this thought that Brother Lawrence shares, "That in order to form a habit of conversing with God continually, and referring all we do to Him, we must first apply to Him with some diligence; but that after a little care we should find His love inwardly excite us to it without any difficulty." Oh, and I just have to share one more, "That our sanctification did not depend upon changing our works, but in doing that for God's sake which we commonly do for our own.""
"Brother Lawrence gives us an example of what it is to "pray without ceasing." This book is a real challenge -- an invitation, even -- to pray and to spend your entire day contemplating God. The end result of such a spiritual discipline is a kind of ecstasy, as the Christian realizes the glory of God. The Christian who practices the presence of God seeks to honor God in every task, whether it be washing dishes or going away for a quiet time of prayer. (Brother Lawrence made no distinction between the two.)"
"God is with me even in the most mundane of tasks. Peeling potatoes can be as much for His glory as a mission to the jungle inhabitants. This lesson has sustained me through the ministry of motherhood and homeschooling. When days are filled with the tasks of a servant; wiping noses, cleaning toilets, preparing meals, lifting up my husband and teaching children I remember this lesson. That God is present with me and enabling me- as close as every breath I breathe."
"A devotional/testimonial from the 1600s - Repetitious but so short (60pp) and insightful that it was well worth reading.
A few favorite lines: 1) "Knowing that God can remedy the mischiefs they do whenever he pleases, he does not let the sins of this world trouble him." 2) "He is pleased when he can perform the lowliest task, such as picking up a piece of straw from the ground, for no other reason except for the love of God" 3) "We often stop this torrent of God's grace by the little value we place upon it." 4) "Not to advance in the spiritual life is to go back." 5) "He is nearer to us than we are generally aware." 6) "We must know before we can love. To know God, we must often think of Him. And when we come to love Him, we shall then also think of Him often""
