About this title: On Christmas Eve a young boy who truly believes in Santa Claus is invited to board the Polar Express--a train that brings him and other young believers directly to the North Pole. Once there, the boy is chosen by Santa himself to receive the very first gift of the Christmas season. The gift the boy selects, a bell from the harness of one of Santa's reindeers, becomes a magical reminder of the boy's very special night. "The soft colors and gentle shadings of Van Allsburg's illustrations contribute to the mood of mystery and support the dream-like quality of the story. Places and people seem to be suggestions of reality rather than concrete images. The soft covering of snow over each picture reminds the reader of looking into another world, as through a snow globe--a world of which the reader is not quite a part but wishes to go to. The use of light is effective in the story and contrasts with the shadows of the night time. The expansive pictures are uninterrupted by the words because they are separated from them with simple rectangular borders."
"This is a great book during Christmas time. It's a beautifully illustrated story about a young boy taking a magical journey train ride to the North Pole. When the young boy gets to the North Pole he is picked by Santa to receive the first gift. The gift he asks for is a silver bell from Santa's sleigh. The bell signfies him believing in Christmas. This story encourages children of all ages to explore their own imagination in this young's boy journey. At the end of the story the bell still rings for him as it does for all who truly believe in the spirit of Christmas. After I finished reading this book to my first grade students, I handed each student a bell to keep and wear around his or her neck. We also created a train made out of grahm cracker and different types of candy for the wheels ( starlight mint, gumdrop, ect). I recommend this story during Christmas time. It's a wonderful story that will capture the students attention!"
"What has become a Christmas classic, this is the story of a boy who goes on a journey to the North Pole to see Santa, by way of a magical train called the Polar Express. The train is filled with other children who sing Christmas carols and enjoy hot chocolate along the trip. Upon arriving at the North Pole, the conductor informs the children that the elves that make the toys are gathered in the center of the city awaiting Santa's offering of the first gift of Christmas. This gift is to be bestowed upon one of the Polar Express' passengers and Santa chooses the narrator. When Santa asked the narrator what he would like for Christmas, he requested a silver bell from Santa's sleigh, which he received and the narrator quickly slipped it into the pocket of his robe. The children request to see the bell once they board the Polar Express. As the train starts to move, the narrator reaches into his pocket and instead of the gift, the narrator finds a hole in his pocket. On Christmas morning, the narrator and his younger sister open their presents and the narrator finds the bell in the last box. He shakes the bell and proclaims it to be "the most beautiful sound", but his parents cannot hear it and assume the bell is broken. As they grow older, the narrator's younger sister and friends can no longer hear the bell either, but the narrator is still able to because he believes. Believing proves to be the tale's core moral, a notion that could be seen as believing in yourself, your dreams, or simply, the things that make you happy. The illustrations are breathtaking and memorable. The Polar Express won the Caldecott Award in 1986."
"The Polar Express is a classic story for all ages. It reminds us of the importance of believing in the majic of Christmas, when the world wants to take it away. The artwork is exceptional. This is a must have book for yourself or as a gift to a friend, child, or grandchild."
