About this title: The title of this book may suggest that it is designed as a latter-day Gradus ad Parnassum to teach aspiring writers to produce passable verses. It is not. It is intended to help aspiring readers deepen their sensitivity to the rhythmical and formal properties of poetry and thus heighten their pleasure and illumination as an appropriately skilled ...

"I found this book, which was first published in 1966 I think, pretty conservative, not to say stodgy. Not an easy read, but I did discover some valuable ways to look at formal poetry. I hope I will be able to internalize them."
"It would seem from the prevailing ratings for this book that I've overestimated the value of this book, but each rater, I'm sure his his own agenda; nevertheless, rarely have I read a work of reference that enthralled me as much as this one did, and I read it as one would a work of top-notch narrative non-fiction.
The book discusses clearly and thoroughly, but without wearing out its welcome, the principal meters and strucutures used by both traditional and "modern" (usually fre-form) poetry. It was fascinating to understand, to an extent I had not before, that even the most open of poetic forms lend themselves to an analysis using these basic tools, and that anyone reading this book with care and attention comes away with means for reading poetry with greater understanding and appreciation. This useful education comes not just from discussion, but from the use of a wide variety of poetry to illustrate major points (to euch an extent that it almost stands as a useful and varied anthology).
I will continue to read it for profit and enjoyment in the years ahead.
(Side note: quite apart from this book, Fussell, a veteran of combat in WWII as an infantryman, has written frankly and penetratingly about war - see The Great War and Modern Memory, and Wartime.)"
