"I'm between two and three stars on this one. The early stuff in here is great, but the later stuff I didn't enjoy/appreciate at all, either in terms of getting the meaning or on an aesthetic level. I imagine it's a lot better in German."
"An uninspired translation, for the most part. In particular, I have a hard time forgiving the translator for messing up the rhythm of 'Todesfuge'. More detailed comments to follow."
"Long in print, this volume is still the best introduction to Celan's work. Hamburger's translations may seem a bit staid next to those of Felstiner, but he does a better job of reproducing the music of Celan's pre-Breathturn works. He falters a bit among the crags of the poet's later work, but his overall approach is consistently admirable."
