"This inspector Lynley book was a bit sadder, a bit more distant, and a bit more dependent on the character development of those individuals surrounding the victim than other books. It was quite a different read, and used a different narrative structure for this series. I liked it, and admired the variance in the pattern. It's a story about a soccer hero who is found in a cottage belonging to friend who is the age his mother would be. It is also about her daughter, and the tragedy of her life. The intermingled people, their dependent relationships, and the sad results of those situations were enlightening as the mystery unraveled."
"George is such a good writer. This one is a little more gritty, and she takes a different tack to convey the story, which is interesting and flows well. But I'm not sure I can completely believe in some of the characters or in some of their actions. In particular, I felt I didn't know Kenneth and his motivations very well. Still, it's a good read."
