"I was inspired to pick this one up after watching a loft screening of the ABC "After School Special" starring Kristy McNichol based on it. Amazingly faithfull adaptation, down to Ms. McNichol's character's penchant for halter tops and general mouthiness. The story, three foster kids discovering the meaning of friendship, is surprisingly good and poingnantly told. The slight heavy-handedness in driving the message home is more due to the target audience (pre-teens) than to the preachiness that afflicts so many "serious" kid's books."
"Three foster children find themselves staying with a nice couple and come to terms with some of their sense of loss. Harvey's mother left him and his father when he was young to find herself and never thought to look back to her role as a mother and the heartbreak of her young son. Harvey's father drank himself to ease the pain and was not much of a father to his son and then one day in a burst of self-indulgence, actually ran over Harvey and broke both his legs. The girl is far too cynical and abrasive for her age but has a caring side that comes through when Harvey's dad shows up and then again when his leg becomes infected right before his birthday. Thomas J. is the youngest of the three. He was abandoned at the farm of the eccentric twin sisters who cared for him until they fell and broke their hips on the same day. This is a good story for grappling with coming to terms with those mixed emotions and wanting to be loved and dealing with everything we get going inside of ourselves."
"I got this book from the school book order form and read it repeatedly while in middle school and probably high school too. I hadn't thought of it in years, but remembered it the other day for some reason.
The story is about three foster kids who end up in the same foster home together. That's all I remember, although I bet they teach each other some lessons."
