About this title: Bunyan's allegory uses the everyday world of common experience as a metaphor for the spiritual journey of the soul toward God. The hero, Christian, encounters many obstacles in his quest: the Valley of the Shadow of Death, Vanity Fair, Doubting Castle, the Wicket Gate, as well as those who tempt him from his path (e.g., Talkative, Mr. Worldly Wiseman, the Giant Despair). But in the end he reaches Beulah Land, where he awaits the crossing of the river of death and his entry into the heavenly city. "Pilgrim's Progress" was enormously influential not only as a best-selling inspirational tract in ...

"I read where this was the most read book next to the Bible, but I'm not sure of that paramount distinction. Maybe so though...
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The language is masterful. The insights to a disciples experience were familiar and well illustrated in fictional form. There were so many "quotable" lines of wisdom throughout the book. I listened to it in audio and the reader was terrific to bring it alive. After listening to it, I went up to Half Price books and found a copy. Glad to have it, truly one of the great reads I've enjoyed. It strengthened my faith and commitment to the Master."
"I have a few versions of this on my shelves from the nicely bound hard back to paper backs I can hand out (you know "loan"),
This is (as I'm sure most already know) an allegorical journey depicting the struggles of living the Christian life. John Bunyan was a Baptist imprisioned when it was againat the law to be a b Baptist (note my review of The Body by Charles Colson). He was imprisioned for (aprox.) twelve years for refusing to convert to Anglicanism (Church of England...this sort of thing by the way is the reason for the first ammendment, not a worry that a child would be asked to pray when their parent is an athiest or the fear the "IN God We Trust" might end up on a coin).
While he was imprisioned he wrote this book. Even if you disagree with his doctrine (and I do in some places) this work is well worth reading."
"While having been a Christian for 20+ years, and having heard much about this oft-mentioned classic, I had never finally finished reading it till this summer.
I was rather unmoved. I suppose that my disappointment has a lot to do with expectations. I thought that this would be a full-fledged novel, with character development, surprises, etc. But it truly is an allegory; characters are nothing more, really, than embodiments of spiritual truths (when we are introduced to characters called "Vanity", "Faithful" and "Worldly-Wiseman", hmmm.....what do you suppose these figures are going to be like?). Now, this has its place - and, surely, there are some marvelous truths of the Christian faith I'm reminded of in this classic work - but I would have preferred a real story, with real characters showing real struggles.
The paraphrase is welcome, and makes the whole work very readable; I would have had a much more difficult time getting through the original text."
"i first learned about this book in christian school in 2nd or 3rd grade..the thing that really influenced me about this book is it had a map in it. It tells the story of a man who goes through lots of things and makes it well when i was living with my dad i felt he was the Apollonian on page 50..and i knew that if i could get past that like the person in the book that i would have lots to life to live and that is part of what i held on to during the time living with my dad - only thing is now i am older and have no idea where i am on the map...:)) i just know i am past the evil thing in the middle of the book."
